At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
